I shipped against a foundation nobody approved
3 seconds.
THE WINDOW A SOCIAL CAROUSEL GETS
Six weeks of social carousels for a supplement brand. I was the designer. The job was to stop a scroll in three seconds and then hold it.
THE HYPOTHESIS — AND THE WRONG PART
That a brand foundation could be written while content shipped against it. Writing the direction was never my call. Continuing to produce against one nobody had approved was — and I kept going.
WHAT I GOT WRONG
Four craft failures. All mine.
None of these are taste. Every one is a rule I knew and didn't apply.
- HierarchyHeadline and body competed at the same size. The results line needed to be 2–3× everything else to survive a three-second scroll. I sized it like body copy.
- Negative spaceI read my own layouts as restrained. They read as empty — and empty is what people point at when work isn't landing.
- The gridI held one grid across every post. The feed stopped registering individual posts and started reading as wallpaper.
- CopyI built layouts around lines that weren't finished instead of sending them back. A placeholder that ships is a decision.
WHAT I CHANGED
Approval is a gate, not a formality.
The checks moved in front of the work instead of behind it.
- FoundationThe direction is a live page, approved inside a day — or production does not start.
- HierarchyEvery layout rendered at thumbnail scale under three-second exposure. If the results line doesn't read, it doesn't ship.
- VariantsTwenty generated in an afternoon. The grid earns its place or loses it.
- SpeedGeneration stopped being the bottleneck. Judgment is.
THE FAILURE MODE

A reconstruction built new for this study, so the failure mode is legible without the client's assets.

THE FIX
Same slide.
Three seconds.
Results copy at 3×. One idea instead of four, and the mechanism shown rather than claimed —
a diagram earns a scroll that a list of benefits never will. Both plates are reconstructions built
for this study, not lifted from an engagement.
